One night I was driving a NYC Yellow Medallion Taxi. It was a quite Tuesday or Wednesday. The time was about two A.M. Driving up Sixth Avenue, cruising for a fare, I encountered a traffic jam at 32nd Street. Hacking my way to the head of the bottleneck at 34th Street, I discover a parade of elephants from the Ringling Circus.
It was totally sensational. The parade was heading West to Madison Square Garden. The Circus train terminates at Sunnyside yards near the Queens Midtown Tunnel. All the circus animals are marched thru the tunnel. They are then paraded across 34th Street.
In the 19th Century there was an expression, “He has seen the Elephants.” It was used to describe a person that traveled a lot.
